Life in Munich

Munich is the third largest city in Germany, and the capital of the State of Bavaria. About 1.5 million people live within the city limits. The city is located on the Isar river north of the Bavarian Alps. Munich is one of the world's top cities with the highest quality of living, and home to the top 5 German universities. In Munich you may find many museums, theaters, and a large variety of architecture worth seeing. The  'English Garden' with an area of 3.7 square kilometers, stretching from the city center to the northeastern city limits, is one of the world's largest urban parks; within the city there are few other parks and several green areas.

Student Life:

Finishing your PhD training takes up a lot of time and effort. Therefore, it is important to find a good work-life balance. Fortunately, Munich's location, close to the mountains and surrounding lakes, makes it one of the most favored cities around the world. Our program, as well as the university, offer activities throughout the semester. You can also use the olympic sport facilities within the college sport program for a small fee. Cost of Living:

Munich is unfortunately one of the most expensive cities in Germany. On average, a monthly expense of around 850 to 1000 Euros is to be expected. Read more(link is external)

Housing:

In contrast to many universities abroad, German universities usually do not have student dormitories. Finding accomodation in Munich can be difficult. Therefore, it is important to start searching early. The outskirts of town are often cheaper and easily accessible by public transport. If you are admitted to the program, we will provide you with specific information on how to best find housing. Leisure activities:

Munich offers a variety of different cultural and sport activities. As a doctoral candidate at TUM, you are allowed to participate in the course program of the university sport center. Read more(link is external)

Family in Munich:

Depending on where you live, it may be difficult to find a place for your children in a kindergarten. You should also familiarize yourself with the peculiarities of the Bavarian school system. A variety of support services are available for TUM students. Read more(link is external)
