TUM and MGC Offer

The Technical University of Munich offers doctoral candidates an ideal environment for their research at its chairs, departments and institutions. TUM Graduate School (TUM-GS)(link is external) was founded in 2009 to promote the networking and further qualification of doctoral candidates, thus combining the benefits of a traditional individual doctorate with its structured doctoral programs.

A Structured Doctorate

The traditional individual doctorate is based on a close collaboration between the doctoral candidate and his/her supervisor in the department or institute. Doctoral candidates mainly work independently on their research project and are supported by their dissertation supervisor. At the same time, they are involved in the work of the department. In this way, doctoral candidates develop their identity as independent researchers.
TUM Graduate School(link is external) supplements the proven individual doctorate with elements that support doctoral candidates and their supervisors. That includes structural measures and qualification offerings based on the best international standards, for instance the early conclusion of a supervision agreement, regular feedback meetings, subject-specific courses as well as offerings for interdisciplinary qualification and financial support for research stays abroad.
